For the first part of 2017, Mutual of Omaha Foundation granted nearly $1.1 million to 31 local non-profit organizations.
The largest grant awarded this period was a general operating grant to Food Bank for the Heartland for $150,000.
According to Susan Ogborn, President and CEO of Food Bank for the Heartland, the grant will allow the organization to fulfill its statewide mission this year – something they weren’t sure they would accomplish without the support. Ogborn said recent changes in private and federal funding have created challenges for Food Bank for the Heartland.
“The most recent statewide numbers of hungry people actually went down this year,” Ogborn said. “I think that’s a sign that what we are doing is truly making a difference. Because of the support of the Mutual of Omaha Foundation and our community at large, we can continue to feed the hungry in Nebraska and western Iowa. The only way we can help people get out of hunger is as a collective community of public and private foundations and volunteers. It takes a multi-pronged approach.”
Gail Graeve, Executive Director of the Mutual of Omaha Foundation, said the Foundation embraces its role in this collaborative effort. “Poverty continues to be a serious issue for our community. We are proud to support organizations that are providing the resources to empower our most vulnerable citizens to reach their full-potential by breaking this cycle.”
